September

Our first month has been quite busy!!  Each grade has completed at least one project so far.

Kindergarten

This month was a testing period to see where each student is with their motor skills and listening skills.  They completed their I CAN CUT, COLOR, AND GLUE booklets.  Next we talked about texture. We experimented with texture plates.  This led us to creating texture burgers!  Students were able to create each layer in their burger with different textured materials, mainly papers but also included foam and cardboard.  Students were also able to choose what went on their burger. It's finished and should be graded and sent home soon.
Remember Kindergarten can receive an 'S' satisfactory, 'W' working towards goal or 'N' needs improvement.

1st Grade

We took a look at Henri Matisse for our first project.  We create free form shaped mobiles.  (You can see our artist below, he's one of our table artists) Students created at least 3 shapes so we could make a small mobile.  If you are in the building check out the lobby and to the office.  The student's work is hanging above!

We also read A Line that Wiggles. Students create five different line that went all the way across the paper.  Then we framed in a section.  Inside that section we now have shapes!  Students colored in each shape a different color than the bordering shapes.

Since we have already looked at two of our elements of design (line and shape...color, form, value, texture, and space) we are going to create a book to keep information on our elements as we discover them. We will be making a small book with of an 4 page folio.  Using string we will bind our books together.

2nd Grade

Our first project was challenging but helpful.  We created an accordion book with definitions of our elements of design and examples of each.  We use these term a lot more in 2nd grade so we need to know what they are.  Some have made their way into our display case and others were already sent home. Look for them!

We focused on line for our next project.  Student created trees that have a trunk and branches.  Only using lines we started to fill in space inside the trunk first.  We used at least two colors so we can see our lines and created a simple AB pattern or ABC with three colors.  Once the trunk and branches have been filled with lines we moved on to our leaves, grass, then sky.  Students were free to choose whatever colors as long as they did not repeat in other parts of the picture.  Since the whole thing is made of line the colors help tell each area apart.

3rd Grade

We look at trees for our first project, specifically the birch tree.  Using space we created a picture that shows trees getting smaller as they go back in the grass. We used tones of green for the grass with tempera paint.  Then we painted the skies with water color paints using warm or cool colors (black was substituted for green since we already used it).  These choices made it look like sunrise or sunset.  The trees were drawn and then applied with black paint in a scraping motion with stiff paper.  They were then cut out and glued on with all trees touching the top of the paper so the gave the illusion of perspective.
